Musculoskeletal Pain in Melancholic and Atypical Depression

2016

Objective. Pain and depressive disorders often present together, but little is known about the prevalence of pain in depression subgroups. The objective of this study was to examine the possible differences in the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain between participants in melancholic and atypical depression subgroups. Design. Cross-sectional study. Setting. Depression nurse case managers where depression patients receive treatment in primary health care. Subjects. Participants included 413 depression patients and 401 controls. Methods. Depressive symptoms were determined with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21), and diagnosis of depression was confirmed with the Mini-International Neurop…

Depression, Anxiety at School and Self-Esteem in Children with Learning Disabilities

2014

Educational research places emphasis on the fact that pupils with Learning Disabilities may develop depressive and anxiety symptoms characterized by lower levels of self-esteem. The aim of this research is to compare the levels of depression, anxiety at school and self-esteem in children with learning disabilities, mathematical disabilities and a control group who showed typical learning. The participants were 132 children (52 girls and 80 boys), with an average age of 9 years, attending the fourth grade of primary school. These pupils were selected by scores on a battery of tests commonly used in Italy for the assessment of learning disabilities. On the whole, analyses revealed that childr…

Diagnoses as Selection Criteria in Drug Trials

1990

Drug trials are needed to establish the efficacy and safety of psychopharmacological agents in clearly defined indications. When the goal of treatment is more complex than removal of an isolated symptom (“difficulty in falling asleep” or “pain”) the syndrome or clinical entity to be treated is most easily classified by way of a diagnostic label (like “depression,” “schizophrenia,” or “panic disorder”). Dimensional models have many advantages: they often fit the data better and provide a conceptual framework for a continuum in the behavior from normal to abnormal. However, they have never reached the popularity of typological models (Strauss 1973, 1975, 1986) which reflect more the medical t…

A combined marker of early non-improvement and the occurrence of melancholic features improve the treatment prediction in patients with Major Depress…

2017

Abstract Background Early Improvement of depressive symptoms within two weeks of antidepressant treatment is a highly sensitive but less specific predictor of later treatment outcome. The aim of this study was to identify clinical features at treatment initiation which are associated with early improvement and non-improvement as well as to identify variables predicting non-remission in patients showing an early improvement. Methods 889 patients with a major depressive episode according to DSM-IV who had participated in an antidepressant treatment trial served as study sample. Clinical predictors (demographic variables, psychopathology, comorbid disorders) were analysed in 698 (79%) early im…

Clinical Predictors of Response to Magnetic Seizure Therapy in Depression

2019

Objectives Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is a novel convulsive brain stimulation method in clinical testing, which is used as an alternative for electroconvulsive therapy in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Preliminary studies have suggested that MST leads to fewer cognitive adverse effects than electroconvulsive therapy but has similar efficacy. However, the clinical predictors of response to MST have not been evaluated yet. This study aimed to investigate whether these predictors can be identified in patients with TRD. Methods Thirty-eight patients with TRD were included. As clinical predictors for treatment response, we used the diagnosis, sex, age, family history, an…
